    It doesn't matter at all anymore.

    I will get my way, and those that stand before me shall soon see their error.

    The boy has no idea what he is getting into. He is much too weak and bothered by 'right' and wrong' to see what he is missing. Pity.

    Oh ho! Good news!

    The Woods gang is gone, and now I need not worry that payments won't get through! Yipee!

    All the Secesh can go bite the dust now too! US Grant took Fort Henry! Why, I bet he'll be celebrating Easter in New Orleans and the Mississippi will flow peacefully in Federal Hands!

    Trueman may be somewhat of a hero now, but he must remember that he still has duties to the company.

    Note to self: Be sure to celebrate recent US military victories with Jon. Drink the good stuff.

    War brought us west and yet I cannot avoid conflict. Gil, my darling boy, rebels to everything I say and I sit and wonder where I went wrong. It pains me very deeply.

    I sigh in relief, however, that he has yet to turn back east and join the Army of the Potomac.

    {The following entry was written on crumple paper, with whate appears to be water damage.}

    In prison.

    This is not the way things are supposed to end. The bread is really terrible.

    I think Keppel bruised me on the way here. I hope Gil is on cell duty.

    {Editor's Note: The following entry, while written in Mr. James Knight's hand, it was extremely wobbly, and altogether messy, which conflicts with his previous entries and personality.}

    This day, I survived a most horrible thrashing. I do not think I will be moving from this bed for quite sometime. I most sincerely detest, now, Madame De la Plume. I can only hope there is a special place in hell for her next to Mister Bartlett. I think I gouged or cut her eye with my thumb, so she got a little of what she deserved.

    I thank God I still have all my teeth and that Mr. Mornaix and Miss Hindman pulled me out of the street.

    Note to self: never go after a burglar with a cane, at the least, bring a knife.

    Am amazed I can hurt so. I ardently hope that in the future, some kind of pain relief may be available to those, like myself, are inflicted with such a righteous beating.

    Also, the new Governor is a Parliamentarian. Why, God? Why?

    My duties have increased ten-fold now that I'm arguing with the governor. Giacardi has obviously had no training whatsoever in the legal field, and I wonder if any of the King's men decided to tell him of the colony's charter.

    And where the hell are all these Italians coming from? I'm getting quite sick of this, especially now that two of them have turned up dead. Christ.

    On top of all this, I think I may have gout. My feet are sensitive and my big toe hurt more than it should have when she stepped on it this morning.

    Am beginning to lay down plans for the next election. Never too early to start!

    {Editor's Note: All entries posted herein are transcribed from the recently publicized library of George Alexander Knight, Conservative MP. James Knight was an ancestor of G. A. Knight, MP, and it has been his Honor's honor to publish the diary entries of James Knight as they become available.}

    This day I met with the new Governor, a Duke Giacardi. He seems a right nice fellow and believed everything I told him. I'm so glad I got to him first. It shouldn't be too hard to convince him that Fanny Trueman is insane, Walsh is having relations with vegetable matter, and Mayhew is a drunken Yorkshire fool.

    I am still at a loss on how to get LP off the gallows. Perhaps I should just let her hang. She's a pirate and it's likely no one will believe a thing she says in her defence. Then again, she got me that fine Spanish-style sofa. I must tell Miss Ruxpin to clean it.

    Why are the women on this island so headstrong? Why can't they be more like Martha? She cooks, cleans, and raises the children and does what she's told. Although now, she is just raising the children thanks to Miss Ruxpin. And Miss Hawkins, Bah! Women? Voting? What an absurd idea!

    It's been several months since the Governor died, and to be honest, I have mixed feelings.
    Goodwin was a fat imbicile. I had no respect for the man. None at all. However, he was easy to manipulate and because of his ban on slavery, I was able to corner the clandestine slave trade in the area. A good many cheap slaves were delivered to close Spanish colonies because of that well meaning doofus, Goodwin.

    If Goodwin is characteristic of the people the King sends here, maybe I'll get lucky and get someone as equally as malleable. On the other hand, he could be a reforming zealot, and threaten my entire operation. Or, given the political landscape at home, he could be a champion of the King, just like myself. Only time will tell.

    I went to the Vicarage and chatted with Maitland's boy, Ethan. I'm afraid he's been rendered a complete fool after spending two years aboard a ship.

    La Plume managed to get herself arrested. God damn her. She better not pull anything stupid it will be hard enough to get her off the hook as it is.

    I hate Peter Oliver. Maybe the new Governor will imprison him.
